Concealed Handgun Permits

  • Requirements for Obtaining or Renewing a Concealed Handgun Permit
    • Applications are available at the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office Administrative Division located at 184 Hodges Gap Rd, Boone, NC 28607.  Office hours are from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday; closed holidays.  Appointments are required for submitting your application.  You may contact this office at 828-265-7612 for more information or to set up an appointment.
    • Applications are also now available online.  Please download and complete the following PDF document BEFORE arriving at your scheduled appointment time.  DO NOT sign or date any part of your application.  A notary will be available at the Sheriff’s Office to notarize your application at no charge to you if an appointment is made.  Appointments take approximately one (1) hour for new applicants, and thirty (30) minutes for renewals.

    • At the time the Concealed Handgun Permit application is submitted, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
      • Be 21 years of age or older.
      • Be a United States citizen.
      • Be a resident of North Carolina for 30 days preceding the filing of the application.
      • Be a resident of Watauga County.
      • You must appear in person (do not mail or fax the application).
      • Not suffer from a physical or mental infirmity that would prevent the safe handling of a handgun.
      • Must not have any of the prohibitions listed in NCGS 14-415.12(b) or Title 18, United States Code (U.S.C.), 922.
    • At the time of application, the applicant must present:
      • A copy of the DD-214 is needed for prior Military people when applying for a Concealed Carry.
      • An original certificate of completion from a certified course adopted by the Criminal Justice Education Training Standards Commission (919-716-6470). Note: A certificate is not required for renewals.
      • Valid photographic identification and showing your correct and current Watauga County address.
      • Naturalized citizens must bring your Naturalization Certificate or a valid U.S. Passport.
      • U.S. citizens born outside of the U.S.A. to U.S. parent(s) must bring your documentation from the Department of State (Consular Report of Birth Abroad, Certificate of Citizenship, or Certification of Report of Birth).
      • A completed Concealed Handgun Permit Application.
      • The cost for fingerprinting is included in the application fee, and you will be fingerprinted at the time that you submit your application.
    • Fees are as follows:
      • New Application: $90
      • Renewal Application: $75
      • Duplicate Permit: $15
      • CASH OR CHECK ONLY!
    • Change of Address:
      • You must request the address change for your permit within thirty (30) days of your change of address. 
        This can be done in person at the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office, or it can be done electronically by emailing norma.green@watgov.org.
      • Before the address can be changed on your permit, you must first update your driver’s license to reflect your current address, and fill out the address change form attached below.  You may fill out the form electronically, but you MUST print the form in order to sign and date your request.  Address change requests will not be processed until the COMPLETED form is received.  Also, please email a copy of your new driver’s license after you receive it from the DMV as well as a copy of your current Concealed Handgun Permit.

      • The only time a duplicate is issued is when your CHP has been lost, stolen, mutilated, or a change of name.  At that time, there will be a fee of $15, cash or check.
