Identify Theft Protection Act of 2005

- Any person preparing or filing a document for recordation in the official records
may not include a social security number or other identifying information as
defined in G.S. 14-113.20(b) in such document, unless expressly required by law.
- Any person has a right to request a register of deeds to remove, from an image or
copy of an official record placed on a register of deeds' publicly available
Internet website or on a publicly available Internet website used by a register of
deeds to display public records or otherwise made electronically available to the
general public, any social security number or other identifying information as
defined in G.S. 14-113.20(b) contained in an official record. Such request must be
made in writing and delivered by mail, facsimile, or electronic transmission, or
delivered in person, to the register of deeds. The request must specify the
identification page number that contains the social security number or other
identifying information to be redacted. No fee will be charged for the redaction of
a social security number or other identifying information pursuant to such a request.
